Schmidt Carries Grandview to Victory

The Grandview Wolves (5-0) defeated the Mullen Mustangs (2-3) on Friday by a score of 42-12. The Wolves were led by junior tailback Noah Schmidt who tallied more than 250 yards on the night.
The two teams played a competitive first half. Grandview capitalized after a fumble by Mullen’s freshman quarterback Kaleb Valdez-Lemos on a 45-yard pass from junior quarterback Jacob Burr to wideout Darius Brown.
The Mustangs also ended their next possession in a turnover after Colton Martin intercepted Valdez-Lemos’ pass. The Mustang defense was tough and forced a Grandview punt.
Grandview was setup with good field position after Wilson Yee’s punt was blocked. Schmidt would find the endzone and the Wolves were up 14-0 with 8:17 left in the first half. Schmidt would find the endzone again after a couple Mustang personal foul penalties gave the Grandview drive momentum.

Mullen would answer just before the half ended. Kaleb Valdez-Lemos found Ben Marcoux who made a great catch and ran it in for a 34-yard touchdown.

Grandview’s first possession of the second half ended on a fumble that was recovered by Mullen’s outstanding defensive lineman, and Notre Dame verbal commit, Aiden Keanaaina. Mullen began that drive at the 15-yard line and came away with 3 points thanks to Wilson Yee’s 26-yard field goal.

It did not take long for Grandview to answer. Mullen’s special teams downed Grandview at their own 5-yard line on the ensuing kickoff. On the very first play of the drive Noah Schmidt broke free and ran it into the endzone 95 yards later.

Grandview went on to score two more touchdowns, one offensive touchdown and one interception return for a touchdown.

Matt Ells got a safety for the Mustangs at the end of the game to give the Mustangs 12 points on the evening.
